Symptoms of Anxiety

  • Restlessness or feeling on edge

  • Muscle tension 
  • Sleep disturbances such as difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep

To be diagnosed with anxiety disorder you need to have at least three of the above symptoms on more days than not for the past 6 months.

There are different forms of anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorder includes: 

  • Generalised Anxiety Disorder
  • Social Anxiety 
  • Specific phobia
  • Separation anxiety 
  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Anxiety disorder is sometime accompanied with other disorders like depression, ADHD, personality disorders.

Therapy Approaches for Anxiety

Anxiety can be managed with psychological talk- therapy and sometimes, together with pharmacology. 

 

Cognitive behaviour Therapy (CBT) is an evidenced based talk therapy for anxiety disorders. 

Other forms of mindfulness based psychotherapy are also very effective for managing anxiety. 

For those who wish to try alternative forms of therapy, yoga and mindfulness meditation have been found to be very effective for anxiety as well.

Sylvia Tan - Founder, Principal Counselling Psychologist, MPsych (SRP Registered)

Sylvia is a Counselling Psychologist practicing in Singapore. She holds a Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology from Curtin University of Technology ( Perth, Western Australia) and is currently a registered counselling psychologist and a clinical supervisor with the Singapore Register of Psychologists (SRP). 

 

After her graduation in 2002, Sylvia lived and worked in Australia for many years before her relocation back to her home country Singapore in 2014. To date, Sylvia has over 20 years of experience working in a range of settings both in Australia and Singapore.
