In this day and age when resources are limited and workload in high, many people are increasingly becoming more stressed out at work. Work stress can be brought about by high workload, it can also be brought about by conflicts at work and pressures to perform.
As many working adults spend most of their working time at work, if one has any difficulties at work, enduring work stress for a long period of time can have a detrimental effect on our mental health as well as our physical health.
Chronic work stress can cause a lot of stress on your body. It can increase your blood pressure, affect your digestive system, concentration, your sleep and your appetite. Such stress places you at risk of developing severe illness like coronary heart disease, anxiety disorders or substance abuse.
Stress at work may be unavoidable. But if you have a healthy coping mechanism to manage stress, your stress levels can be reduced and become manageable. You can go back to calm and be able to deal with more challenges.
However, if you have an unhealthy coping mechanism, your body will always be in a state of stress and distress, leaving your overwhelmed and unable to cope. This may cause you to develop have chronic stress which in turn, can lead to damaging effects in your mental and physical health.

- Poor boundary setting
- Not allowing yourself to take breaks
- Negative self talk

Counselling For Work Stress
Counseling can be an effective way to address and manage work stress. Your psychologist can help you identify the sources of your stress and develop strategies to cope with and reduce it.
During counseling sessions, you may discuss your work environment, responsibilities, and relationships with coworkers and supervisors. Your psychologist will explore with you your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors related to work, and identify patterns or triggers that contribute to your stress.
We use a variety of techniques to help individuals manage stress, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), which aims to change negative thought patterns that contribute to stress; relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing or mindfulness meditation; and stress-management strategies, such as setting boundaries or prioritizing tasks.

She holds a Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology from Curtin University of Technology ( Perth, Western Australia) and is currently a registered counselling psychologist and a clinical supervisor with the Singapore Register of Psychologists (SRP).
After her graduation in 2002, Sylvia lived and worked in Australia for many years before her relocation back to her home country Singapore in 2014. To date, Sylvia has over 20 years of experience working in a range of settings both in Australia and Singapore.
